At The Reclaimed Company ®, we specialise in high-quality traditional building
materials designed to balance durability, sustainability and heritage-grade performance.
Our Code 4 Lead Flashing is one of the most widely used and trusted lead sheets in the UK,
chosen by roofing contractors, conservation specialists and restoration professionals for its
reliability, workability and long-term weatherproofing.
Product Overview
Code 4 lead flashing is a versatile mid-weight rolled lead sheet used to prevent
water ingress and provide long-lasting weatherproofing at roof junctions. Manufactured to
BS EN 12588, Code 4 lead flashing offers the ideal balance of strength
and workability for most pitched roof details, making it the default choice for domestic, heritage and commercial projects.
Code 4 lead flashing is ideal for:
- Step flashings to chimneys and abutments
- Soakers used with thicker or heavier slates such as stone slates or Westmorland slates
- Dormer cheek cladding and small vertical panels
- Vertical cladding details formed in welted or standing-seam panels
- Apron flashings and abutment flashings to pitched roofs and parapets
- Valley linings on pitched roofs in moderate-exposure zones
- Lead gutter linings and narrow box gutters
- Bay window roofs and smaller flat or low-pitched roof areas
- Lead welding, patch repairs and localised detailing work
- Smaller technical details such as cladding timber balls, finials and feature mouldings
- Parapet wall cappings installed in welted panels with correct drips and laps
Technical Specifications
Code 4 lead flashing is a mid-weight rolled lead sheet manufactured to
BS EN 12588, offering a reliable balance of strength and workability for most pitched roof details.
Code 4 Lead – Key Data
- Code: Code 4 (roofing grade rolled lead)
- Nominal thickness: approx. 1.80 mm
- Weight: approx. 20.41 kg/m²
- Tolerance: ±5% in accordance with BS EN 12588
- Formats: 3 m and 6 m rolls, cut to length on request
Composition & Standards
All of our Code 4 lead flashing is produced to BS EN 12588:2006, the British and European
standard for rolled (milled) lead sheet. This ensures:
- Consistent thickness across the sheet with a strict ±5% tolerance
- Uniform composition with a minimum 99.95% lead content
- Excellent malleability for dressing around chimneys, abutments and complex details
The Code 4 designation refers to the weight per square metre, helping designers and installers
select the correct lead code for each roofing application.
Installation Considerations for Code 4 Lead
- Allow for thermal expansion with correct bay sizes, laps and welts
- Use copper or stainless steel fixings to prevent galvanic corrosion
- Apply patination oil after installation to reduce white carbonate staining
- Avoid direct contact with timber treatments that contain ammonia or aggressive chemicals
Installation should follow BS 6915 and current LSTA (Lead Sheet Training Academy) guidance
on bay sizing, fixings, underlay and ventilation.
Sustainability & Heritage Value
Lead is one of the most sustainable roofing materials available. Offcuts and end-of-life material
can be recycled indefinitely without loss of performance. Code 4 lead flashing is also widely specified for
heritage and conservation work, helping maintain the original character of churches, listed buildings
and period roofs.
