Code 4 lead is typically used for stepped and cover flashings, aprons, back gutters and low-exposure valleys. For wider gutters, flat bays or high-exposure details, step up to Code 5 or Code 6 in line with BS 6915 and Lead Lads® technical guidance.

Code 4 roofing lead is the most widely specified grade of rolled lead sheet for pitched roofing
in the UK. Manufactured to BS EN 12588, it offers a nominal thickness of 1.8 mm and a weight of
approximately 20.41 kg/m², making it ideal for chimney flashings, abutments, cover flashings and vertical cladding
details. When installed to BS 6915, Code 4 lead provides long-lasting weather protection on both
domestic and heritage projects.

Where Code 4 Lead Performs Best

Code 4 roofing lead is the standard choice for most pitched roof flashings. It has enough body to resist wind uplift and thermal movement, yet remains easy to dress into joints, chases and complex details. It is especially well suited to traditional slate and tile roofs, including projects using Westmorland, Burlington and stone slates.

Typical Code 4 applications include:

  • Stepped flashings to abutments and chimneys
  • Cover flashings over Code 3 soakers or flashings
  • Aprons and back gutters around chimney stacks
  • Low- to moderate-exposure valleys on pitched roofs
  • Small cladding panels and detail work to dormers
  • Soakers where larger or heavier slates are used

For valleys, parapet gutters, flat bays and high-exposure details, heavier grades such as Code 5 or Code 6 are recommended. Installation should follow BS 6915 and LSTA guidance to manage bay sizes, laps, fixings and thermal movement.
