Old Snooker Slates

Snooker table slate is dense, stable and beautifully workable. Built to deliver an exceptionally flat playing surface, reclaimed snooker slate makes superb reclaimed slate slabs for modern projects — especially slate hearths, worktops and bench tops.

  • Typical thickness: often 30–50mm (varies by table)
  • Typical format: multi-slab sets with joint holes and corner cut-outs (can be trimmed away)
  • Best uses: slate hearth slabs, worktops, shelves, bench tops, thresholds, outdoor prep tables

These second hand snooker table slates can be cut, polished and honed to suit your application. With the right finishing, reclaimed slate is hard-wearing, heat tolerant and looks superb in both traditional and modern interiors.

Weight & handling note: reclaimed snooker slate is heavy. As a guide, slate is typically ~2,700–2,900 kg/m³, so a 40mm slab can be well over 100kg per m². Please plan safe handling and ensure your substrate/support is suitable.

Popular pairing: fitting a new wood burner? Snooker slate makes an excellent fireplace hearth when sized correctly. Tell us your stove model/output and preferred hearth size, and we’ll help you choose a suitable reclaimed slate hearth slab.

If you need multiple slates for a set, we’re happy to help you choose the right ones. Stock is dynamic, with new slabs in and out weekly. Collection is available from our York yard, or we can arrange UK-wide delivery.

Reclaimed Snooker Table Slate — Uses, Sizing & Buying Guide

Why Snooker Table Slate Works So Well

Snooker tables demand an exceptionally flat, stable playing surface — that’s why they use premium slate. When reclaimed, those same qualities make the slabs ideal for precision applications like slate hearths, worktops and bench surfaces.

Reclaimed Slate Hearths for Wood Burning Stoves

If you’re buying reclaimed slate for a hearth, you’ll usually be balancing appearance, thickness and finished size. Hearth requirements vary depending on stove type, installation details and the surrounding construction, so we recommend you confirm your installation plan with a competent installer. As a practical starting point, most hearths need adequate non-combustible coverage around the appliance and a stable, level base.

  • Best for: thick slate hearth slabs, stove bases, fireplace hearths and freestanding stove areas
  • Plan for: trimming off pocket cut-outs / edge defects to achieve a clean rectangle (where needed)
  • Tell us: stove model/output + desired hearth size + finish (natural / honed / polished)

Tip: Share your required finished dimensions (L × W) and we’ll advise which reclaimed snooker slates offer the best yield once cut-outs/joint holes are considered.

Common Projects Using Reclaimed Snooker Slate

  1. Fireplace hearths and stove bases (excellent mass and durability)
  2. Kitchen worktops and prep counters (cut, hone and seal)
  3. Utility / workshop bench tops (flat, heavy, stable)
  4. Bathroom vanity tops (with suitable sealing and edge finishing)
  5. Outdoor kitchen counters and BBQ prep areas
  6. Thresholds, copings and window boards (where thickness is useful)

What You’ll See on Reclaimed Snooker Slates

  • Joint holes (for brass pins between slabs)
  • Corner cut-outs from original table pocket areas
  • Surface marks from historic use (often polishable / refinishable)

Finishing note: most reclaimed snooker table slate can be refined by a stone worker using diamond tooling, then finished as natural, honed or polished depending on the look you want.

Buying Reclaimed Snooker Table Slate

What to Check Before You Order

  • Dimensions: measure your required finished size (L × W) and note any cut-outs you need to remove.
  • Thickness: reclaimed snooker slate is heavy — confirm handling, access and substrate support.
  • Finish: natural / honed / polished (most fabricators can achieve any of these).
  • Delivery access: pallet delivery needs suitable access and unloading arrangements.
  • Heat use: for hearths, plan the final size and clearances around the stove, and confirm your installation approach with your installer.

Need Multiple Slabs?

If you’re creating a larger surface from multiple pieces, we can help you select slates with compatible thickness and appearance for a better finished result. This is especially useful for worktops, bench tops and larger slate hearth layouts.

Comparison: reclaimed slate vs other hearth materials

  • Slate vs granite: slate gives a softer, more natural look and can be easier to refine; granite is often higher gloss and can feel more “engineered”.
  • Slate vs limestone: slate is generally denser and better suited to hard-wearing hearth/bench uses; limestone is lighter and can mark more easily.
  • Reclaimed vs new: reclaimed slate keeps premium material in circulation and often delivers greater thickness and character.
