Reclaimed Welsh Slates — History & Heritage

Reclaimed Welsh slates have had quite a history. Interestingly, slates of different sizes were named after female nobility, a system devised by General Hugh Warburton at the Penrhyn Quarry in 1738. This system went on to become an industry standard for over two centuries.

Welsh slates have been a popular choice of roofing material for centuries — their durability as a roofing material is widely regarded as unrivalled.

Salvaged Welsh Roofing Slates

The Reclaimed Company stocks many sizes of reclaimed or second hand Welsh slates, all available for local collection or national delivery.

It is our view that second hand slates provide an excellent roof covering and have a proven track record as a quality roofing material, when correctly selected, sorted and installed.

When replacing a slate roof it is often more economical to consider the use of reclaimed Welsh slates versus new. Repurposing slate and matching it to those previously removed from a roof area also reduces the environmental burden of producing and transporting new slate products.

Product Information (Important)

Please note: all second hand slates purchased from The Reclaimed Company will have nail holes present. Colours and textures may differ from images depicted (illustrative only). Slates must be sorted and graded prior to installation. Allow a contingency for waste: circa 3% for breakage during transport and a further 5% for breakages during hoisting and installation. Reclaimed products do not come with any guarantee of longevity and no returns will be accepted. It is your responsibility to ensure the slates ordered are suitable for their intended purpose.
