Westmorland slate is also available new to order. Still Quarried today by the Honister Slate Mine in the heart of The Lake District National Park.
The roof covering of choice for many of our finest buildings, Westmorland slate is arguably one of the best roofing Materials out there providing superb durability and a striking aesthetic with its green colouring.
Often laid in diminishing courses some of the slates on the bottom courses on older properties can be up to 50″ going down to 12″ at the top of the roof rafter.
The Buttermere and and Westmorland Green Slate Company is England’s last working slate mine, now operated by the Weir-Wilkinson family the business is now know as Honister Green Slate.
The slate is mined from 11miles of underground tunnels deep beneath a mountain called Fleetwith Pike. Westmorland slate has been in use for centuries by the likes of occupying Romans and ancient Monks.
