With a plethora of chimney cowls and terminals available on the market, things can get confusing. Fortunately, there are some decent guides available online about which cowl is which.
When looking for a cowl, consider that most fulfill a specific function. Usually, such functions are to prevent water ingress whilst allowing ventilation.
in some instances, bird prevention is the main function of a chimney cap or cowl.
However, some chimney terminals are specifically designed for use with certain types of an internal appliances such as gas fires or open fires.
Commonly, most flues should have a free flow of air to prevent condensation.
In brief, we have categorised the types below:
- Pepper pots. – Usually available in buff or natural red these terminals sit inside a chimney pot, prevent water ingress but allow ventilation owing to the holes around the edge. Secure in position with silicone or similar adhesive substance.
- Rook guards. – Place inside a pot to prevent ingress of birds, can be used with open fires or wood burning stoves, secure these into position using copper wire.
- Hooded cowls. = Used to prevent water ingress but leave the flue open, these can allow birds to get in construct nests. They are not suitable for use with open fires or wood burners.
- Gas cowls. – Often used where a gas appliance is connected to a flue. Always check manufacturer-specific before installing this to terminate a gas appliance.
