Description

What Is a Clay Pepper Pot Insert?

A clay pepper pot insert is a ventilated chimney terminal designed to fit inside an existing chimney pot. It is primarily used to terminate redundant or unused chimney flues, helping to reduce direct rain entry while maintaining essential ventilation through the flue.

Manufactured from durable fired clay, pepper pot inserts provide a traditional appearance that complements both period and modern chimney stacks. Ventilation is provided by a series of evenly spaced openings around the upper section, allowing the redundant flue to breathe and helping to reduce condensation.

Available in natural buff and red clay finishes, they are suitable for most traditional clay chimney pots when the correct spigot size is selected.

Installing a Pepper Pot Insert

Pepper pot inserts are designed to slot securely into the top of a suitable chimney pot, where the spigot locates inside the pot and the upper flange rests on the rim.

Before installation, inspect the chimney pot for cracks, loose mortar or damaged flaunching. Where appropriate, the insert can be secured using a suitable exterior-grade flexible adhesive or weather-resistant sealant in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Always ensure safe access to the chimney stack using appropriate working-at-height equipment. If you are unsure, the installation should be carried out by a competent roofing or chimney professional.

If you require assistance, The Reclaimed Company can recommend experienced local installers. Depending on your location, installation may also be available through Hot Box Stoves or GNR Roofing Services, who can also arrange suitable access equipment where required.

Can Pepper Pot Inserts Be Used on Fireplaces or Stoves?

No. Standard clay pepper pot inserts are intended for redundant chimney flues only. They should not be fitted to chimneys serving a wood-burning stove, multifuel stove, open fire, gas appliance or oil-fired appliance unless their suitability has been confirmed by a competent professional.

Live flues require a chimney terminal or cowl that is compatible with the appliance, flue system and manufacturer’s installation requirements. Selecting the correct chimney cowl helps ensure safe operation, appropriate draught performance and compliance with the relevant installation guidance.

If your chimney is connected to a working appliance, we recommend choosing a suitable chimney cowl or speaking to a qualified installer before purchasing.
