When looking for a cowl, consider that most fulfill a specific function. Usually, such functions are to prevent water ingress whilst allowing ventilation.

However, some chimney terminals are specifically designed for use with certain types of an internal appliances such as gas fires or open fires.

Rook guards. – Place inside a pot to prevent ingress of birds, can be used with open fires or wood burning stoves, secure these into position using copper wire.
Hooded cowls. = Used to prevent water ingress but leave the flue open, these can allow birds to get in construct nests. They are not suitable for use with open fires or wood burners.
Gas cowls. – Often used where a gas appliance is connected to a flue. Always check manufacturer-specific before installing this to terminate a gas appliance.
