Insulation for roofing
Roof insulation must be understood in context. This section provides a selection of commonly used insulation products.
Improving the insulation levels of a roof space is a requirement to comply with Building Regulations when undertaking any re roofing project.
Our selection is by no means exhaustive, but offers key products for insulation horizontal ceilings, in between rafters, or on top of flat roof areas to create a warm roof build up.
Call UsMore about roof insulation
Roof insulation is a critical component in maintaining energy efficiency, comfort, and structural integrity in UK homes. Proper insulation reduces heat loss, lowers energy bills, and contributes to environmental sustainability. When undertaking a re-roofing project, it’s essential to understand the various insulation types available and adhere to current building regulations.
Types of Roof Insulation Available in the UK
-
Blanket Insulation (Batt and Roll):
- Material: Typically made from fiberglass, mineral wool, or sheep’s wool.
- Application: Suitable for loft spaces with standard joist spacing; laid between and over joists.
- Advantages: Cost-effective, easy to install, and provides good thermal performance.
-
Rigid Foam Boards:
- Material: Made from materials like polyisocyanurate (PIR), polystyrene, or polyurethane.
- Application: Ideal for insulating pitched roofs, flat roofs, and dormer cheeks; can be placed above or below rafters.
- Advantages: High insulation value per unit thickness, moisture-resistant, and adds structural strength.
-
Blown-In Insulation:
- Material: Loose-fill materials such as cellulose, fiberglass, or mineral wool.
- Application: Used for filling gaps in irregular or hard-to-reach areas in lofts.
- Advantages: Good for topping up existing insulation, quick installation, and effective at reducing drafts.
-
Spray Foam Insulation:
- Material: Polyurethane foam applied as a spray that expands and hardens.
- Application: Suitable for complex roof structures and hard-to-reach areas.
- Advantages: Provides excellent air sealing and high R-values.
- Considerations: Recent reports have highlighted issues with spray foam insulation, including inadequate ventilation and potential damage to roof timbers, leading to properties becoming unmortgageable. The UK government has barred nearly 40 firms from installing insulation following complaints of substandard work.
-
Reflective Insulation:
- Material: Foil-faced materials that reflect radiant heat.
- Application: Often used in combination with other insulation types; installed in lofts or roof spaces.
- Advantages: Effective in reducing heat gain during summer months and can enhance overall insulation performance.
Building Regulations for Insulating a Property During Re-Roofing
In the UK, building regulations stipulate specific requirements for roof insulation, especially during re-roofing projects:
-
Approval Requirements: If re-roofing involves replacing more than 25% of the roof area, building regulations approval is necessary. This ensures that the roof’s structural integrity, fire safety, and energy efficiency standards are met.
-
Thermal Performance: When re-covering a roof, it’s often required to upgrade the thermal insulation to meet current standards. This may involve improving the insulation properties of the roof to enhance energy efficiency.
-
Competent Roofer Scheme: Roofers registered under the Competent Roofer scheme can self-certify their work as compliant with building regulations, eliminating the need for separate local authority approval. This can streamline the compliance process for homeowners.
Adhering to these regulations ensures that the re-roofing work is safe, durable, and energy-efficient. It’s advisable to consult with local building authorities or a qualified roofing contractor to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations during your project.
