Interestingly, Westmorland Slates have been quarried, opencast, since the late 17th century, they are a superb roofing material.

Further, extensive expansion took place during the later part of 19th century and, by 1891, 3000 tonnes per year were being extracted. Employment at the mine was in excess of 100 men.

Consequently, after the Second World War, poor management and difficult trading conditions the quarry was sold to Alfred McAlpine PLC (now defunct) who ran operations for Sir Robert McAlpine Limited who still operate today.

Today, Westmorland slate, now known as Honister Green Slate operates the mine as a tourist attraction and to form slate products including Westmorland slate.

Moreover, green in colour they provide a striking appearance and adorn some of the most prestigious buildings up and down the country including Buckingham Palace
