Under and Over Roof Tiles – Traditional Interlocking System for Heritage and Contemporary Builds
Overview
Our Under and Over Roof Tiles offer a time-honoured roofing solution inspired by classical Mediterranean and European roofing styles. Perfect for both heritage restorations and modern builds seeking character, these tiles create a beautiful curved profile that promotes exceptional water shedding and airflow beneath the roofing surface.
Tile Detail – How the System Works
The “under and over” system consists of two types of tiles:
-
Under Tiles (Concave): These tiles are laid face-up in a row along the roof deck to create channels for water runoff. Their curved shape helps direct rainwater away from the roof and into the gutters efficiently.
-
Over Tiles (Convex): Placed upside down over the joints between the under tiles, these tiles cover the seams to prevent water ingress and add the signature ridged texture to the finished roof.
Together, this configuration allows for a ventilated roofing structure that reduces moisture build-up, prolongs the life of the roof, and enhances thermal performance.
Materials Used
Our under and over tiles are manufactured from a selection of high-quality, durable materials, each chosen for its weather-resistance and aesthetic value:
-
Clay:
-
Traditional and breathable, clay tiles are fired at high temperatures to enhance strength and durability.
-
Naturally resistant to UV rays, frost, and moss growth.
-
Available in various shades from terracotta to deep burnt sienna, often used for listed buildings and period properties.
-
Reclaimed Clay:
-
Salvaged from historical demolitions or refurbishments, offering authentic aged patina and weathering.
-
Promotes sustainable building practices and is compliant with BS5534 when installed correctly.
-
Concrete (on request):
-
More uniform in colour and shape, suitable for newer constructions looking for a traditional look with modern precision.
-
Heavier than clay, offering enhanced wind resistance.
-
Natural Stone (limited availability):
-
Ideal for prestige properties or region-specific builds requiring stone roofing.
-
Hand-cut and curved to mimic traditional under and over styling, though heavier and typically more expensive.
