Anvils: what are they for?
An anvil is a metalworking tool consisting of a large block of metal, usually forged or cast steel. A flattened top surface, upon another object is struck (or “worked”).
Anvils are as massive as is practical, because the higher their inertia. The more efficiently energy of striking tools transferred to the work piece. In most cases the anvil is a forging tool. Before the advent of modern welding technology, it was a primary tool of metal workers.
The great majority of modern anvils will be made of cast steel. Modern anvils are heat treated by either flame or electric induction. Inexpensive anvils made of cast iron and low quality steel are great for use by individuals. They are considered unsuitable for serious use as they deform and lack rebound when struck.
Anvils existed in the Bronze Age and possibly earlier. They were used thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece and also Ancient Egypt.
