The History | Westmorland Slates<\/h2>\r\nInterestingly, Westmorland Slates have been quarried, opencast, since the late 17th century, they are a superb roofing material.\r\n\r\nFurther, extensive expansion took place during the later part of 19th century and, by 1891, 3000 tonnes per year were being extracted.
