William Bylth<\/h2>\n

Established in 1840 William Blyth is one the oldest roofing companies in the UK. Manufacturing a wide range of handmade clay roof tiles and fittings. William Blythe uses reserves of alluvial clay situated on the Southern banks of the river Humber. Traditional firing techniques produce a unique array of natural colours and textures.<\/p>\n

Using time honoured traditional methods and also a highly skilled workforce, William Blyth products match and enhance any new build, heritage property as well as commercial concerns.<\/p>\n

Age old methods of drying and firing in natural alluvial clay creates a tile. The tiles have excellent weathering properties and a renowned durability.<\/p>\n

Pantiles<\/h2>\n

A Pantile is a type of fired roof tile, normally made from clay. S-shaped in profile and is also a single lap, meaning that the end of the tile laps only the course immediately below. Flat tile normally lap two courses.<\/p>\n

A Pantile roof is considerably lighter then a flat-tiled equivalent. Pantile rooves can be laid down to a lower pitch than a flat tile roof.<\/p>\n

Geographical Area and History<\/h2>\n

Found in eastern costal parts of England and Scotland including Norfolk, East Yorkshire, County Durham, Perthshire, Angus, Lothian as well as Fife, where they were first imported form the Netherlands in the the early 17th century. Rarely used in western England or western Scotland, except in Bristol and also the Somerset town of Bridgewater.<\/p>\n

Pantiles used for paving<\/h2>\n

Very unlike the roofing tiles. A Georgian colonnade in Tunbridge Wells named The Pantiles had pantile paving tiles installed in 1699. These are one-inch thick square tiles made from heavy Wealden clay. Named after the wooden pan which gave their shape before firing. Stone flag tiles replaced The Pantiles paving In 1792.<\/p>\n
